 "Ruined On First Use" 2009-12-09
By Kathy
I was very excited to get my new non-stick Calphalon cookware and 4 piece nylon utensil set. The first time I cooked with high heat on my Calphalon non-stick skillet the nylon Calphalon spatula melted. The front edged flaked or melted, whatever you want to call it. It's now peeling into my food. Also, the solid spoon now has a white-ish tint to the front portion of the spoon after using it in boiling water. I have never put any utensils in the dishwasher or used them in a way other than what the manufacture recommends. I am deeply disappointed in this set. I will take it back for a refund as soon as I can find a superior replacement.

Note: The box says silicone and nylon heat resistant to 500 and 400 degrees, respectively.

"Premium quality kitchen tool set" 2009-12-08
By Nathan Beauchamp (Oak Park, IL USA)
Calphalon is probably best known for their chef quality cooking pans (which I also own) but they're starting to make a name for themselves with their supporting cast of cooking tools as well. I've used a broad variety of kitchen utensils over the years from super cheap wood ones to high quality Good Grips. Of them, Calphalon are among the very best. The reason is simple: extremely high build quality. All of the Calphalon utensils are made of high density plastic with slightly softer plastic handles. They are a single piece of forged nylon which makes them extremely durable. I've been using a set for over a year non-stop and they still look new. Because they are nylon, they are hugely resistant to heat and will not easily melt or deform if accidentally left in a hot pot or pan. They also will not scratch your non-stick pots and pans (or even hard anodized pans if you have them). They also each have a small eyelet that will allow you to easily hang them if that's your thing.

I've never had a problem with the gray part of any of these utensils popping off. I've also never had any of the Nylon flake off or get stressed from repeated use. I use these tools literally everyday, but I suppose that it is possible that others have used them more strenuously than my family. From my experience, I'd say this is about the best set of kitchen tools that I've ever owned.

If you prefer professional kitchen tools, these are for you. For a slightly higher price you get a much nicer tool that will last practically forever. As well made as Calphalon's pot/pan sets, they're premium quality utensils.

Highly recommended.

"Replaced all my kitchen utensils with these" 2009-12-02
By S. Nellis
When I bought my first house several years ago, I bought a set of OXO kitchen utensils that were cheap. I didn't do much cooking, so I figured they would get me by. I used them for years, but when I got married, we got got a Calphalon Nylon spatula as a wedding gift. I have since replaced all my OXO utensils with Calphalon Nylon ones.

It's plastic, so you don't have to worry about it splitting or absorbing bacteria like a wooden one. They are well-constructed; you can scoop a heaping pile of mashed potatoes or sautè a heavy piece of meat without it bending much at all. The handle is fairly thick, so it fills the hand better than many others. The grey strip runs almost the entire length of the shaft and is slightly softer than the black body, so it offers a good grip. But the thing that made me switch everything over is its "unibody" construction. Other kitchen utensils have a shaft that tapers to the scoop which is attached to the handle with an adhesive. The problem is that, over time, the seal between the shaft and the handle can open up a bit, which lets in water whether you're using a dishwasher or washing by hand. The water can be annoying when unloading the dishwasher and, at worst, can become tepid while sitting in a drawer, dripping into your food when you take it out for use. There's nowhere for water to get stuck on these, so you don't have to worry about it.

They have been used at very high temperatures on my stove top and sent through the dishwasher dozens of times and are no worse for the wear (whereas my old OXOs have many grooves in the shaft from sitting on the side of a pot for even a short time). You might pay a little more for these, but they are worry-free and will last as long as you want to use them. I actually got a Calphalon Essentials spatula at one point, but the Nylon line is quite a bit better.

Currently, the most helpful review mentions flaking, easy bending, and the grey strips falling off. I don't know if he/she got an especially bad set or I got an especially good one, but I have been using these consistently for almost two years and have not experienced any of that.

Pros

- Plastic: more sanitary than wood and doesn't scratch non-stick cookware like metal

- Sturdy construction with thick handle

- Softer grey strips on handle give good grip

- Nowhere for water to be accidentally stored

- Very durable; used for two years with no significant signs of wear

Cons

- More expensive than many other spoons

These are great quality utensils. I purchased new pans and didn't want to scratch them up. I like the weight of these, and the grip.

 "On Second thought....." 2009-07-29
By K. Seamons (Northern Mich)
When I began to search for new kitchen items, the first criteria was "Made in America". Somehow the levee was breached on that one. When these tools arrived, the individual slotted turner was

first and used foremost. I didn't plan on opening the boxed set until I knew I wanted to keep it. Since I did, they came out, and that "MADE IN CHINA" emblazoned on the box was made apparent.

So what makes the tool flexible, yet not flammable? Some of that lead they've been putting in exports? Is this where the poison goes they're not putting in the dog food? Maybe the chemical they put in the toothpaste ended up here. Since I cannot bring myself to touch my food with these things, I'll keep them until I can donate them to some relief effort where someone else might not be so picky.
