"Great Cookware; but 4, not too terrible issues" 2009-01-08
By ebay8503 (Ohio)
I would rate this 4.6; reasons to follow:

To start off, I spent around 5 months of looking into cookware before I made a decision on these. Some of the "Honorable mentions" would be All Clad, Emeril Ware, Simply Calphalon, Calphalon One, Calphalon NonStick, and the Calphalon Anodized. After much debate, handling, and "weighing of pros and cons", I settled on this set.

The BreakDown:

I LOVE this set and would definitely purchase these lil' gems again. I plan on getting married soon and I'm the more of the cook in the relationship; hence, I was looking for something long-term and that both of us would feel comfortable using.

THE SELLING POINTS:

Stylish, brushed stainless steel coating. Looks good now, should still be in style later on. Traditional look with a contemporary style.

See-through lids (although it fogs up and you can't see anything anyway, it's a splashy idea nonetheless)

Smooth handle with "Y" connected handle - This is GREAT since the heat transfer area is slight and really keeps the handle safe to the touch. The other thing with the handle is that it's easy to hold even with the heavier pan (3-quart sauté pan). When I checked out All Clad's cookware, their handles hurt my hand. Theirs is in the shape of a sharp edged trough - I could barely hold the thing without pain; and this was before food was in it.

Weight: These don't really weigh all that much compared to some of the other brands. By no means is it lightweight; but it provides a "solid" feel to it. My Fiance, who has small hands (ring size 3) doesn't have a problem handling these. She used All Clad and hated the handle design and the weight of them.

Even Heating: it's been mentioned before, but these really do heat up evenly. Some (Emerilware) have this little copper/metal base on the bottom of the pan. Pretty much only the food above the base gets cooked and the outsides don't. I've never had a problem with uneven cooking, even with a largely stuffed pan. Don't misunderstand this, you still do have to rotate food while cooking; but this isn't a serious concern.

Non-stick: Although this set is NOT non-stick. It sure has some of it's properties. I can make a fried egg with no problem and saute stuff with no sticking. IF food does start to stick, see Tip 1 below.

THE BLAHHH:

Heating: It IS true...these will heat up quickly. DO NOT put these past HIGH! Even Med-High is pushing it. In my experience, I can saute onions, peppers, chicken ect at low-med heat with no problem. I can not tell you how many times I've burned olive oil in these things; and it's a $***& to get off. If you do happen to burn stuff in these, get BarKeeper's Friend. It takes off most of what you had on there.

Tip 1: I found out that after cooking a particularly "dirty" dish (or if food starts to stick to it), I'd have to use BK Friend to get it back to where food (eggs in particular wouldn't stick to it).

Edges: You'll notice that there's an edge for where the lid fits comfortably in place. The problem here is that if you burn something in the pan, you'll need a knife/razor blade to scrape this stuff off. Even BKF won't get off some of this stuff if you burn it on good enough. I like the edges, but the fact that there's no way to really clean this is a con.

Scratching: Ok, here's the deal with this. Calphalon DOES say that you CAN use metal utensils with this set. Using metal utensils doesn't hurt the cookware; but it WILL scratch them. I use wood or plastic with these and have had great luck with it. In the case that I do need to scrape stuff off the bottom. I have no problem with using metal. If I'm somewhat careful, I might inflict a minute scratch.

Washing: This really isn't a Con per se, but it can be a turn-off to some people. You WILL have to hand wash these and DRY them when you're done cooking. No air-drying here. It'll leave water marks and food will stick.

Tip 2: always use hot soapy water when washing this stuff and never put cold water in these when they're hot in order to get the "bits" off. You'll ruin it and void the warranty.

Conclusion:

From talking to other people, this set seems to be a bit more finicky about it's care and use than some of the other brands. For me, this has been a "Smooth" set to work with and it seems to be a great tool. Something that I'll be using for a rather long time. It is one of the more expensive of Calphalon's line, and you can't always find this line. Get the stuff early, and get all the matching stuff that you'd want - it might not be here forever.

 "Very happy" 2009-01-08
By Gerald Love (Tampa)
First a comment on some of the specific complaints I've seen in the review: These are stainless steel. The are not non-stick. If you are going to fry eggs and the like, you should pick up a tefflon-coated skillet (remember that non-stick-coated pans tend to last only a half-decade or so, are limited to 450f, and are generally not dishwasher-safe). Also: if you over-heat these, or put in the wrong things, they will discolor. This can be removed relatively easily with Barkeeper's Friend (or LemonJuice I am told). If you misheat, or under butter/oil, things will stick.

So why get Stainless? It will last far longer than tefflon. It will carmalize better than aluminum. It won't interact with foods. It is oven safe to very high temperatures (though the glass lids are only safe to 450, pick up some steel lids if you need to). They are far more rugged (can use metal utensils, though I don't; can use the dishwasher, though I don't).

I've been very happy with these so-far. They have performed better than expected (the aluminum core is quite good at moving heat) and are beautiful. Right now they are in their "somewhat scratched" phase, which is the least attracive (it's between "pristine" and "uniformly scratched so it looks 'brushed'"), and I'm proud to show them off. I just need to pick up a Sautisse and I should merrily cooking for many years to come.

"Professional looks at the right price" 2009-01-04
By N. Goff (Virginia)
I've become a proficient cook with this set. I eliminated Teflon and all-aluminum cookware from my home and this is the best alternative. Don't expect this to work like Teflon. Stainless will only be non-stick if you know when to turn the food, have the right temperature and amount of oil, and healthier oils can aid the concern of too much fat. Some food sticking is not of concern to me, as long as I get the right food consistency and presentation.

Of course, scratches will show with regular use; as with metal utensils (not recommended), and at the bases from contact with any metal burners. Even with scratches I hang my set in my rack proudly -makes me look like a serious cook. These are intended to last a lifetime if you know how to care for stainless.

I recommend handwashing only if you want the looks to last, since some detergents are not appropriate. Barkeepers Friend is great, and vinegar takes care of those splotchy, mottled stains common in stainless.

The glass lids are more attractive and practical than full metal ones. My favorite part? The handles. These are sturdy and slightly curved as compared to the plain and straight ones from All-Clad. The logo stamping at the end of the handles makes an elegant detail.

 "Great buy!" 2009-01-03
By Elizabeth Lager
I debated for a long time over buying new cookware. I researched stainless steel vs. nonstick vs. all-clad, etc. In the end I ended up buying this set and I could not be happier. They have made my attempts at cooking new things turn out so much better. And they look great hung up in my kitchen. I've now had these for one year, and they still look and work great.

 "so far so good" 2008-12-28
By nicknick (california)
I just bought this set. I was actually going to the store to buy All Clad, but there was such a good deal and so many extras on Calphalon, I decided to try them out. Both my husband and I cooked in them. My husband had stuff sticking all over, but he used too high of heat. Mine did not stick. Even with his food sticking, they cleaned so easily (I did have to use Bar Keepers Friend on the pan that he made potato in to get the rainbow coloring off of it, but it did not take any longer that washing it with dish soap). My husband was not to sure about them after his experience. I cooked bacon and sausage in them as well, no sticking. I decided to put them to a real test, an egg. I scrambled an egg (only way I like them lately), and let it set out for several minutes, and did the butter test that was in the directions. After adjusting the temp. to get it right, I poured the egg into the pan (half expecting it to stick after reading some reviews). Not one piece stuck!! I have an electric glass cook top, so if it was going to stick, it would probably be on my stove. So far, they seem like they will work out good. They were definitely a great value for the quality. I will update if I find anything wrong with them, or any other problems.

By K. Seamons (Northern Mich)
When I began to search for new kitchen items, the first criteria was "Made in America". Somehow the levee was breached on that one. When these tools arrived, the individual slotted turner was

first and used foremost. I didn't plan on opening the boxed set until I knew I wanted to keep it. Since I did, they came out, and that "MADE IN CHINA" emblazoned on the box was made apparent.

So what makes the tool flexible, yet not flammable? Some of that lead they've been putting in exports? Is this where the poison goes they're not putting in the dog food? Maybe the chemical they put in the toothpaste ended up here. Since I cannot bring myself to touch my food with these things, I'll keep them until I can donate them to some relief effort where someone else might not be so picky.

 "Great product" 2009-02-09
By Discerning Shopper
We have previously owned Calpahalon nylon utensils and were impressed with them enough to replace them with Calphalon nylon utensils again (we only needed to replace our originals since someone melted the tips of a couple of the turners (mind you those were rated to 400 degrees, so this was a case of user error)). They are sturdy enough to handle any cooking we have used them for and are of excellent quality. On the turners, the edges of the blade are tapered so that they will slide under whatever you are cooking. This ensures that you won't destroy that grilled cheese sandwich or pancake when you need to flip it. The only caveat is that you also need to make sure that you are careful with what you scrape from a pan, as thoroughly stuck items could damage the edges (probably not much of a concern if you are using these on non-stick pans). I wish the handles were as thin as they used to be, but this is a relatively minor issue. All in all, a good purchase.

I've been using these utensils for a few months now and have not had any problems with them. They work well with stainless steel dishs and pots and do not leave any scratches. Also I've used them in high heat and they have not even melted in the slightest.

Get these utensils when the price is right, their worth every penny.

 "Excellent product" 2008-05-23
By majax79 (FL)
I've only had these for a short time but they were good enough for me to buy more products from Calphalon.

They're lightweight and durable. They have quite a long handle. I've only used them on my nonstick products and NO melting. I've had such an issue with that in the past. They are dishwasher safe (no melting).

I'm so glad I listened to the positive reviews and purchased these. I bought a separate stainless steel canister and put them all together. I don't know what other information I can give about them except they are what they say they are.

I'd highly recommend this product.

These utensils are the same ones you will buy separately, not some cheap knock offs. The hold the Calphalon name true - they are very high quality, a great shape and easy to work with. They work great with the non-stick Calphalon cookware, and are very big (normal?) in size. I was a little worried the turner and spoons weren't going to be big enough, but they are full size.

"Good set, but shop around for the best price" 2009-04-04
By Deal hunter (Bloomington, IL)
I bought these pans a couple weeks ago after A LOT of searching and investigating different brands. I was replacing an 10+ year old t-fal set as well as misc. Cuisanart pots & pans. I was willing to pay more for a good set, but I am a bargain hunter by nature. I had one Calphalon omelet pan I really liked, so I ended up buying this set. I investigated All-clad, Circulon, Cuisanart, Anolon, and Calphalon. My previous cuisanart nonsticks were flaking after a couple years of use. The main reason I settled on this set was the solidness and weightiness of the pans. They are heavy and sturdy. If you are looking for a lightweight set, this is not it. I did not purchase my set from Amazon. Several other sites were the same price or a little less with the addition of free pans or baking sets with your purchase (which Amazon did not offer). You can find good deals if you do a little internet searching. I also was trying to decide between the hard anodized and nonstick. If you want very little cleaning, go with nonstick. Hard anodized need a little elbow grease and food does stick at times. You have to use more fat for cooking. These pans are great because the inside is coated, but the rest of the pan is hard anodized, so even if you get stuff on noncoated parts, its easier to clean off. The handles are easy to handle. They get warm midway up, but most people use the middle & latter half for handling, so this is not an issue. I have cooked cheesy dishes, meats, chicken, eggs, pasta & all came out easily. They also heat evenly and I feel I've been able to use lower settings, so they must conduct heat pretty well. The only reason I gave 4 stars was due to the rivets. They are in the inside of the pans and are obviously not nonstick. If you cook sticky things like cheese, tomato sauces, etc it will stick to them. It can take some work at times to get that area clean all around the rivets. The large stock pot is not as big as I would have thought. It is taller, instead of wider to accomodate the 8 quarts. The lids are nice and heavy, so they don't slip with steam and you can watch your cooking without opening the pan or pot. In general this is a good set. Just shop around for pricing. Internet auction sites also have them pretty cheap and unused with free shipping. I spent under $250 shipped with the buy it now option and got 18% cashback by using "Live search" (MSN search engine available to everyone). I think the "One" line from Calphalon is its best since it incorporates nonstick and hard anodized technology. Even if you scratched the pan, you would have hard anodized underneath, so your stickiness would be minimal. I use only wooden or plastic utensils in this set. I've only had this a short while, but so far, its worth it, especially at the price I ended up with. Shop around & get it, you'll be pleased.

 "Nonstick layer peels off" 2008-12-05
By J. Frank (Tampa, FL)
I purchased this cookware set five years ago. Initially, I was very happy with it. The handles stay cool even with high temps and the food cooked easily without sticking. After frequent use, the nonstick layer started peeling off the pans and I would find flakes of Teflon in my food. I always use wooden or plastic cooking utensils and never metal.

Do not put these in the dishwasher or your warranty will be void. I don't do it often but they have been in the dishwasher and even though Calphalon said that wasn't the cause of the problem, they won't replace any of my pans. I won't purchase anything from this company again.

"These have a lifetime warranty" 2008-11-30
By Steph Plum
I received the set 4 or 5 years ago for Christmas. I really like the way they cook and haven't had problems with food sticking to the pan. They clean up easily. However as others here have written, the nonstick finish does wear off after a while no matter how carefully you wash and store them. So I Googled the customer service address and you can return your pan to the company and they send you a new one. I've already returned 2 pans and have another one or two that will have to be returned sometime in the next 6 months. So, yeah the initial investment is high, but where else can you get a brand new pan every few years with no questions asked?

 "Buyer Beware" 2008-07-27
By Esterrific (Nantucket, MA United States)
We recieved these as a wedding gift in 2004 and now I find that we need all new pots and pans. I love to cook and use these everyday. First - they do not heat evenly, I am constantly moving food around the pan to get the right heat. They have been chipping almost since they were new. We take very good care of our things, and always washed these pans carefully and have never used a metal utensil. So what gives? I have a non stick pan I brought to college (a LONG time ago) that has faired better than these. I have to wonder why they are being sold through a clearance company?

 "Such a let down..." 2008-03-27
By Mandy K. (USA)
We had the 13" skillet and a pot, both the Calphalon One non-stick. They both began chipping and flaking after about 5 months. Normally I would think, if someone complained of this happening to them, that they were obviously doing something wrong to the finish. I can assure you that we take very good care of our cookware. We never put them in the dishwasher, hand-washed them the same night after cooking with them, never used metal utensils on them, and used very soft sponges to clean them. Our skillet began flaking so bad that it started to rust last week so we had to stop using it. Both the pot and skillet began to chip around the time time, and they were used for two very different cooking purposes. I believe the finish was defective in the products sold a year ago. We went in to Bed Bath and Beyond last night to see if we could exchange the two pieces for stainless steal. (They let us, by the way, believing as well that they were defective). While at the store, we stopped to take a gander at the same pot and skillet - the new ones have a totally new finish on them. It looks completely different from ours we bought over a year ago. I think Calphalon knows about this defect and have since tried to make the product better. So maybe if you purchase a new piece, you'll have better luck. However, I would strongly recommend stainless or cast iron above a non-stick set any day. Even though it's Calphalon brand, beware.

Also, we bought the Calphalon One grill pan the same day we bought the skillet and pot. The Grill pan is still in top shape, never flaked at all. We cleaned it the same way we did the skillet and pot. And strangely enough, since it's a grill pan for meat, I've used metal tongs on it all the time - not one scratch or chip or flake. I think it's hit and miss with Calphalon as they seem to always be changing their products. Even in the store last night we saw a rack of omelet pans, all with minor differences - they were all the same product number and same price, yet some had smaller rivets, some had slightly different handles, etc. (Leading me to believe that they are constantly changing their design - not to say they are making them worse, I believe they are trying to make their products better, but you might get stuck being the "lab rat" as they work out the kinks.) I'm just concerned that Calphalon isn't the top-of-the-line brand they used to be. It makes sense, though. The more a professional brand becomes accessible to the public at large, the more they skimp on the production.

Another reason why I'm wary of Calphalon now is that on their care instructions, it doesn't matter if it's hard-anodized, stainless, non-stick, or whatever - they have almost unreasonable instructions. You can't soak them, you can't use cooking spray, you can't you can't you can't. I would think that a top brand like Calphalon would be focusing on ways to make outstanding cookware - pieces that stand the test of time and are actually made to be cooked in and cleaned. That's just my opinion, but only in a perfect world I guess.

I'm giving them one star b/c I really hoped to use these products longer than one year. Also, it claims to evenly distribute the heat but it never did, even from day one. For the same price or slightly cheaper, you can get stainless or cast iron so this set is NOT worth the money.

 "What Was I Thinking!" 2009-02-19
By bellnbanjo (pittsburgh)
The main purpose of non-stick cookware is easy cleaning. That purpose is totally defeated in this cookware because the nonstick interior is interrupted by the aluminumin rivets with which the handles are attached - food sticks to them, and around them. I am soooo sorry I bought this!! I was replacing 20-year old T-Fal that was simply worn out. I should have stuck with T-Fal (bad pun intended).

"Either save your money and buy a cheaper set or spend more and get something better" 2008-12-23
By M. Forrester
I was given this set a year and a half ago and so far have had to send back three pieces because of the nonstick finish. I will say I like cooking with the anodized - it heats faster and retains heat well so it is easier to cook with. But the nonstick finish they put on this cookware is terrible. It flakes off and scratches easily. I baby them, follow all directions, etc. only use silicone or wood utensils. In my opinion the surface should not scratch if you are using an approved utensil. Calphalon has been good about honoring their warranty and have replaced everything I sent back so far but I am getting tired of having to keep sending things back. As money permits I am gradually replacing mine with Le Creuset. I don't know if the higher end Calphalon is better, but I can't bring myself to spend the money on it with the experience I've had with this set.

"Save your money..... this stuff doesn't last!" 2007-05-03
By J. Lake (Ohio)
After a mere 16 months I have to replace this cookware set because all of the nonstick coating from the bottom of the pans has apparently been an unwelcome addition to the family dinner. I will not make the mistake of paying BIG money for an overpriced, poor quality cookware set again. I've done my homework this time around and won't leave my choice up to thinking because I paid more that that would in any way reflect quality. I will never again buy nonstick. It will be stainless steel for me and it will NOT be Calphalon.

 "Great set..." 2007-04-25
By B. Valentine (Seattle, WA)
Pots and pans is more of a personal choice... but I found these work great. I have used them for a few months now and they still look brand new. I have a gas stove top and you can't see any burn marks, etc.

Non-stick works perfect - easy clean up every time. I like the added bonus of the grips on the handles as you can hold them and feel virtually no heat while they are on the stove.

Heat distribution seems to be fine.

I only wash them by hand, I have not tried to put them in the dishwasher as I am afraid it will damage them, besides, clean up is so easy, you can be done with it in no time.

 "Careful on the pricing..." 2008-11-07
By James B. Herndon
Was looking into possibly buying this set, but probably not here.

The Calphalon website says suggested retail price for this set is $299. Not sure where the inflated suggested retail is coming from. I saw a similar note on another Calphalon review - same situation.

 "Perfect for Us" 2008-01-18
By Rand Van Zandt (Cloudcroft, NM)
This 8-piece set fits our needs perfectly. We've not been disappointed. The omelet pans turn out perfect eggs. Nothing sticks (inside or out)to any of the pans. We ordered separate lids for the omelet pans and they fit snugly. This is a great set of cookware.

 "Be cautious when purchasing" 2006-01-13
By Jason Klein (Miami Beach, FL United States)
I had received this set for my Birthday from a friend. When we unpacked the set we noticed the 8 Quart pot was scratched on the interior. This made the non-stick aspect of the pot worthless. I gave the pots back to my friend and he returned them to Amazon and had a new set sent out. When we received the new set the 8 quart pot again had scratches inside the pot. I thought I would contact Calphalon to inquire about the damage and see what they had to say. I called the Calphalon customer service number but was on hold for so long I gave up. In retrospect I would spend the extra money and stay away from the non-stick surfaces with teflon coating which are prone to scratch easily. If you get the Calphalon One Infused-Anodized pans which you will never have to replace let alone deal with the lack of customer service. Remember the old saying "you get what you pay for." I don't think these non-stick pans will look very good after a years worth of use. If you do choose to buy these pans examine them when you open the box for damage.

Love the glass covers and how they sit in the pans. And finally, a little bit of curves in hard anodized cookware. They heat quickly and clean in a snap. The handle stays completely cool during cooking as well. I'm extremely satisfied.

 "Loving them!!" 2009-04-03
By J. Watler (FL, USA)
I purchased my Calphalon Contemporary set about a month ago, and I'm very impressed. So far, NOTHING seems to stick to these pans! I've even accidentally burned a few dishes (they require less heat that I'm used to), and not even the burned portions stuck to the pans. Clean-up is a breeze. The Teflon is holding up very well, and has proven to be resistant to scratches. The set is very attractive and the feel of it is great - not too heavy, not too light. Being able to go from stove top to oven, is also a great plus. I also purchased the "grill" pan, and I'm very happy with it as well. I'd recommend this set without reservations.

"These pans do not last!" 2009-02-16
By Chrissy B (CT, USA)
I registered for the Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick 10pc set (plus an extra dutch oven in this line) for my wedding 2 1/2 years ago. It was a pricey set--the kind that I wouldn't buy for myself, but registered for, hoping that it would be a durable set that would last my husband and I a long time.

Well, within a year, the two frying pans began to peel their Teflon coating. Now, 2 1/2 years later, 4 out of 6 of the pans I got are shedding their Teflon. I was responsible with them--NEVER put them in the dishwasher, and ONLY used nylon/silicone tools to cook with or clean them.

When I contacted Calphalon, they would "consider" replacing them if I paid to ship the affected pans to them. Even then, I wouldn't get a refund or be able to exchange them for a stainless steel pan in their line, but a replacement of the same pans. We decided to just go out and buy a stainless steel set. We didn't feel like paying a fortune to ship them our pans, just to recieve the same ones in return.

Pros:

Great look, easy to clean.

Cons:

A $450+ set with a Teflon coating that only lasts 1-2 years, regardless of how well you take care of them.

 "Makes cooking enjoyable!" 2008-11-14
By Lorraine Chidester
I bought this set of cookware a couple years ago and haven't regret it yet. The pans are all holding up well. Yes, wear comes with use, but the quality is certainly revealed. These pans clean up EASY, no scrubbing needed. There are some minor stirring marks, but the material has not peeled or chipped. I highly recommend these pans, they make a great mid-line product.

 "They don't last!" 2008-08-13
By Disappointed Cook (Denver, CO)
I bought this set when my husband and I were married four years ago. I love to cook and bake, and thought these pans were great in the beginning. Four years and $400 later, I am very disappointed. The nonstick coating in every pan is peeling off. Let me be clear: These pans have NEVER seen the dishwasher, metal utensils, or anything but loving care. We thought we were investing in pans we'd have for a long time. Not so. Now, we wish we would've just gotten the stainless All-Clad instead. These were cheaper in the beginning, but they're costing us in the long run. If you're registering for your wedding gifts, DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID. Use caution when purchasing any nonstick pans; they'll all fail over time, and you'll just have to keep buying new pans when the coating peels. Learn from my mistake and save yourself the trouble. Skip these pans!

"Really nice to cook with" 2008-05-04
By JRC (CA)
Food cooks better, more evenly than the cheap Tfal I had. No sticking problems. Would like a smaller pan in the set. Easy to clean the interior with the Dobie pad. More trouble to keep the exterior clean. The large sauce pan came with a scratch on the rim and I am considering exchanging it. Love the clear glass tops. Handles do get hot. Pots are heavy and have aggravated my tennis elbow.
