"sorry i bought this set" 2009-12-08
By Patricia Gonzalez (Bakersfield, CA USA)
i regreted buying this product after a few weeks of using them. dont be fooled by the caphalon name. the soft grip handles on these pots "slide out" when the pans heat up as this can be very dangerous especially if your transferring a pan from one burner to another. also you have to cook your food on low heat or your food will stick. i definitely do not recommemd.

"Save your money..... this stuff doesn't last!" 2007-05-03
By J. Lake (Ohio)
After a mere 16 months I have to replace this cookware set because all of the nonstick coating from the bottom of the pans has apparently been an unwelcome addition to the family dinner. I will not make the mistake of paying BIG money for an overpriced, poor quality cookware set again. I've done my homework this time around and won't leave my choice up to thinking because I paid more that that would in any way reflect quality. I will never again buy nonstick. It will be stainless steel for me and it will NOT be Calphalon.

 "Great set..." 2007-04-24
By B. Valentine (Seattle, WA)
Pots and pans is more of a personal choice... but I found these work great. I have used them for a few months now and they still look brand new. I have a gas stove top and you can't see any burn marks, etc.

Non-stick works perfect - easy clean up every time. I like the added bonus of the grips on the handles as you can hold them and feel virtually no heat while they are on the stove.

Heat distribution seems to be fine.

I only wash them by hand, I have not tried to put them in the dishwasher as I am afraid it will damage them, besides, clean up is so easy, you can be done with it in no time.

 "I can't cook anything with this!" 2009-12-22
By Dax D. Carver (San Francisco, CA USA)
I was so excited to get the 10-piece set. Then, to much major disappointment, everything sticks to the frying pans! And DO NOT blame the cook. I'm so tired of other reviewers and Calphalon blaming the customer. That's an old marketing ploy to make customers feel inadequate, and I'm not buying it.

Yes, I freaking know this is not nonstick, so shut up. Yes, I have followed the directions to a tea each and every time I've used the pans: Heat the pan up to the necessary cooking temperature. Don't try to make it heat up faster, just wait. Then, and only then, put oil or butter in the pan. Then cook.

One poster said to never used aerosol cooking sprays. Well, Calphalon should be the one to say that if it's the case. According to their directions, cooking spray is okay as long as you spray the food prior to placing it on the pan and do not spray the pan directly.

I know how to cook. I know how to read. I know how to follow directions and I have.

I thought perhaps I didn't have enough oil (which is bad since I'm already trying to control my fat intake). So, I put more oil in the pan this morning for my eggs (cause I don't personally like stuck-on-pan eggs ... and just forget omelets). IT STILL STUCK! I have NEVER owned a pan of any kind that stuck with that much oil. This is crazy. What is making it stick? There's something wrong here.

It was highly recommended by the guy at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, but I have a feeling he would have highly recommended anything we asked him about just to get us out of his hair or to get us to buy something.

So, I guess I'll take the set back and exchange it for the Unison. This is disappointing because the Unison set doesn't even come with a 12" pan, which I need and it already cost $100 more.

OR, perhaps, I won't get Calphalon. All of my bakeware is Analon and the quality is so amazing.

 "Worth the investment" 2009-12-05
By J. VanOeveren (NYC, NY)
This set is perfect for any family that spends a lot of time in the kicthen and is definitly worth the investment. All the pieces are sturdy, cook evenly, and yes while they are technically not non-stick, all of our food, including eggs, have cooked perfectly. I read some of the other reviews concerned about damaged pans becuase of poor packaging. However, I talked to a Calphalon rep and they said that that problem had been resolved. Sure enough, our pans came wrapped safely in plastic and seperated by cardboard. No nicks or dents. You do need to follow recommended directions for cooking (i.e., heat up pans before adding oil) and keep your pans clean for optimal cooking. But, if you are a cooking enthusiast, there really is nothing like have a quality set of cookware without the worry of teflon flakes in your food. And with the lifetime warrenty and responsive customer service to top it off, this set has been wonderful.

 "Chef Review" 2009-10-20
By D. Levin
I am chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America. When I got married over a year ago I put these pans on my registry excited to finally have a really good set of pans like my parents. I was looking for the perfect pan that combines restaurant quality with home ease. Overall, they have been a big dissapointment. The 12 fry pan lost the flat bottom after it's first use. Food does stick to the bottom of the pans. I have learned if you leave the food, like a piece of chicken, in the pan till it's almost burn point, then, and only then, does it become "non stick." I will use these pans for a few years and then trade in to Calphalon under the warranty to something different.

 "Not Impressed After All..." 2009-08-31
By Megan (Seattle, WA)
When I first received these pans as a wedding present I LOVED them. They do sear food beautifully as promised. And they clean up pretty well, although you do have to hand wash them and use Bar Keeper's Friend to keep them looking nice, which is tedious. I just celebrated my 4 year wedding anniversary, and I am no longer impressed with these pans. They have not withstood the test of time as I had hoped. For starters, the 12" fry pan warped! I called customer service and I was told by Calphalon that this was caused by high heat settings and a burner smaller than the pan (I have a standard stove top, so my largest burner is definitely not 12" in diameter). I meticulously read and followed the care & use instructions when I received these pans and they conveniently did not mention this potential problem. My second gripe is that the surface dents and dings over time when you use metal utensils (which they say are ok to use...). At first this seemed like just a cosmetic problem for the pan, but the surface coating is starting to wear off now where the pan has been nicked (by my Calphalon metal utensils). There are metallic silver indents all over the inside of my pans now. As a result, I am getting more food sticking to my pans. So, I am not impressed. With very careful care, I think these pans would last and they do cook nicely. But really, there are so many precautions you must take while using them... it seems ridiculous given the price tag! There must be better products out there. I have friends that have Scanpan and they swear by them. Plus, they are environmentally friendly AND you can clean them in a dishwasher if you are in a pinch. I am going to try out those pans instead.

"Scared of the Non-Stick Finish" 2009-10-14
By E. Starks (Clifton, NJ)
We purchased these pans about a year ago without doing much research. They are sturdy and well-constructed, and we use them every day. However, I am reading more and more bad things about the dangers of non-stick finished pans. If I had done more research I would have just gone with the stainless steel. Alas.

 "Loving them!!" 2009-04-03
By J. Watler (FL, USA)
I purchased my Calphalon Contemporary set about a month ago, and I'm very impressed. So far, NOTHING seems to stick to these pans! I've even accidentally burned a few dishes (they require less heat that I'm used to), and not even the burned portions stuck to the pans. Clean-up is a breeze. The Teflon is holding up very well, and has proven to be resistant to scratches. The set is very attractive and the feel of it is great - not too heavy, not too light. Being able to go from stove top to oven, is also a great plus. I also purchased the "grill" pan, and I'm very happy with it as well. I'd recommend this set without reservations.

"These pans do not last!" 2009-02-16
By Chrissy B (CT, USA)
I registered for the Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick 10pc set (plus an extra dutch oven in this line) for my wedding 2 1/2 years ago. It was a pricey set--the kind that I wouldn't buy for myself, but registered for, hoping that it would be a durable set that would last my husband and I a long time.

Well, within a year, the two frying pans began to peel their Teflon coating. Now, 2 1/2 years later, 4 out of 6 of the pans I got are shedding their Teflon. I was responsible with them--NEVER put them in the dishwasher, and ONLY used nylon/silicone tools to cook with or clean them.

When I contacted Calphalon, they would "consider" replacing them if I paid to ship the affected pans to them. Even then, I wouldn't get a refund or be able to exchange them for a stainless steel pan in their line, but a replacement of the same pans. We decided to just go out and buy a stainless steel set. We didn't feel like paying a fortune to ship them our pans, just to recieve the same ones in return.

Pros:

Great look, easy to clean.

Cons:

A $450+ set with a Teflon coating that only lasts 1-2 years, regardless of how well you take care of them.

 "Makes cooking enjoyable!" 2008-11-14
By Lorraine Chidester
I bought this set of cookware a couple years ago and haven't regret it yet. The pans are all holding up well. Yes, wear comes with use, but the quality is certainly revealed. These pans clean up EASY, no scrubbing needed. There are some minor stirring marks, but the material has not peeled or chipped. I highly recommend these pans, they make a great mid-line product.

 "They don't last!" 2008-08-13
By Disappointed Cook (Denver, CO)
I bought this set when my husband and I were married four years ago. I love to cook and bake, and thought these pans were great in the beginning. Four years and $400 later, I am very disappointed. The nonstick coating in every pan is peeling off. Let me be clear: These pans have NEVER seen the dishwasher, metal utensils, or anything but loving care. We thought we were investing in pans we'd have for a long time. Not so. Now, we wish we would've just gotten the stainless All-Clad instead. These were cheaper in the beginning, but they're costing us in the long run. If you're registering for your wedding gifts, DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID. Use caution when purchasing any nonstick pans; they'll all fail over time, and you'll just have to keep buying new pans when the coating peels. Learn from my mistake and save yourself the trouble. Skip these pans!

This 8-piece set fits our needs perfectly. We've not been disappointed. The omelet pans turn out perfect eggs. Nothing sticks (inside or out)to any of the pans. We ordered separate lids for the omelet pans and they fit snugly. This is a great set of cookware.

 "Be cautious when purchasing" 2006-01-13
By Jason Klein (Miami Beach, FL United States)
I had received this set for my Birthday from a friend. When we unpacked the set we noticed the 8 Quart pot was scratched on the interior. This made the non-stick aspect of the pot worthless. I gave the pots back to my friend and he returned them to Amazon and had a new set sent out. When we received the new set the 8 quart pot again had scratches inside the pot. I thought I would contact Calphalon to inquire about the damage and see what they had to say. I called the Calphalon customer service number but was on hold for so long I gave up. In retrospect I would spend the extra money and stay away from the non-stick surfaces with teflon coating which are prone to scratch easily. If you get the Calphalon One Infused-Anodized pans which you will never have to replace let alone deal with the lack of customer service. Remember the old saying "you get what you pay for." I don't think these non-stick pans will look very good after a years worth of use. If you do choose to buy these pans examine them when you open the box for damage.

"these are getting returned today" 2009-10-03
By happy camper
i registered for these after reading reviews (everywhere but amazon or i would have thought twice) and seeing them at bed bath and beyond. i liked that they were not too heavy, nonstick, hard anodized and i thought the calphalon name was a good one. i got the set and 3 pieces had already been slightly damaged due to the packaging rubbing too hard against the non stick surface. i didn't think it looked too bad though and decided to keep them. storage was a whole other problem. i don't have a pot rack and used to keep my old set nested inside each other in the drawer under my stove. since the finish will get scratched if they rub against each other i had to completely reorganize my cabinets so i could find space for all of the pieces. i ended up nesting them anyway but have to keep an old dish towel between each piece so nothing touches. about a week after getting them i made pasta in one of the pots. i added some basil, oil, red pepper flakes and garlic salt and stirred it (with a wooden spoon) around until i heard and felt it scratch. i dumped out the pasta and there was a 3 inch scratch from the garlic salt i guess. so that did it for me. i know you are supposed to be careful with the nonstick finish and i am. i have all silicone, nylon or wooden utensils. i clean them properly. but it is too much of a hassle now worrying the food will scratch it too. i am returning this set today and buying a stainless steel set.

 "What Was I Thinking!" 2009-02-19
By bellnbanjo (pittsburgh)
The main purpose of non-stick cookware is easy cleaning. That purpose is totally defeated in this cookware because the nonstick interior is interrupted by the aluminumin rivets with which the handles are attached - food sticks to them, and around them. I am soooo sorry I bought this!! I was replacing 20-year old T-Fal that was simply worn out. I should have stuck with T-Fal (bad pun intended).

"Either save your money and buy a cheaper set or spend more and get something better" 2008-12-23
By M. Forrester
I was given this set a year and a half ago and so far have had to send back three pieces because of the nonstick finish. I will say I like cooking with the anodized - it heats faster and retains heat well so it is easier to cook with. But the nonstick finish they put on this cookware is terrible. It flakes off and scratches easily. I baby them, follow all directions, etc. only use silicone or wood utensils. In my opinion the surface should not scratch if you are using an approved utensil. Calphalon has been good about honoring their warranty and have replaced everything I sent back so far but I am getting tired of having to keep sending things back. As money permits I am gradually replacing mine with Le Creuset. I don't know if the higher end Calphalon is better, but I can't bring myself to spend the money on it with the experience I've had with this set.

"Strong Recommendation for Calphalon Tri-Ply" 2009-12-12
By Sharla D. Hein (Houston, Texas)
I did a lot of looking, read a lot of reviews and made the decision for the Calphalon Tri-ply. It had all of the benefit of the cladded cookware, without the big prices of the All-Clad and designer brands. The 13 piece set is a good starter. I added the double-boiler and the steamer. I am asking for the large stir-fry cooker for Xmas.

I have used the cookware for about 6 mos. on a glass top range and have found no issues. They clean nicely and when they spot or stain, just use some Barkeeper's Friend to bring them back to life. The glass lids are nice for seeing what's happening; however they may pose some risk if they were left on dry pan. They will have tendency to pop and creak when they come off and on the hot pans. Just take care.

Good value and good product.

"You need Cinderella to clean this cookware" 2009-12-10
By Lola (Piscataway, NJ)
For 30 years I used a great set of Wear-ever All-Clad cookware. Last month I thought it was time to update so I read on line and visited the store to see quality first-hand.

I purchased the Calphalon stainless steel Tri-ply 13-piece cookware set.

Pots are very difficult to clean even with the recommended Bar Keepers and Dobie Pad. Lids are very difficult to clean due to pieced design. Everything spots these pans--oatmeal, tea, steamed vegetables.

The lid handles and pot handles get very hot. You must always use a pot holder. The pot handles slip and twist in your hand (potholder) when you are pouring anything weighty, like three cups of popcorn. Handles are poorly designed, style and composition.

One star because the food does cook and the pots were pretty.

 "Not Your Older Sister's Made-In-USA Calphalon" 2009-11-20
By Nekobasu (South Lake Tahoe, CA, USA)
I have a set of Calphalon tri-ply cookware that I purchased in 1996 when I got married. It was all made in USA back then, which was the biggest reason I felt I could trust it. For some reason, Calphalon's web site incorrectly states that tri-ply was introduced later. That's not true. The line was later re-engineered to use less metal and for lower quality standards in order for manufacturing to be outsourced to China. Look on the packaging for tri-ply products in your local Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, or other store that carries it. It's now made in China.

One very noticeable difference is that the old lids have thick handles. The thinnest part of the cross-section of the top center of the old lid handles is about 3/8" thick. The same cross-section of the new lid handles is 3/16" thick at most. In addition, the seam at the spot weld where the metal rim is joined to itself is very smooth and unnoticeable unless you specifically look for it. On the new lids, the same spot weld joint is offset about 1/64" and is obvious to the casual observer. You might think 1/64" is small, but when you consider that the same joint on the old lids is aligned to within less than 4/1000" (less than the thickness of an average human hair), it's way off.

Another difference I've noticed is that the pots and pans feel lighter that than the old stuff. This means that there is less metal, which translates into less even heat for cooking, and a greater chance of warping.

For some very stupid reason, when the tri-ply cookware was re-engineered for Chinese manufacturing, someone got the "bright" idea to change the shape of the pan and lid rims. That way, if I buy additional pieces of tri-ply for my kitchen, the pans and lids are incompatible with my existing tri-ply collection. The Chinese are becoming increasingly wealthy. The day will come; maybe in another 10-20 years; when manufacturing will get re-outsourced to Africa. The Chinese are already doing this themselves. At that time, you can trust Calphalon to re-engineer the tri-ply line again for even less metal and lower quality. You can be sure that it won't be compatible with what was made in USA or China either. Caveat emptor.

If I were starting out all over again on purchasing a cookware set I plan for my grandchildren to inherit, I would look for an American or European manufacturer that continues to make products that are compatible with what they manufactured at least 50 years ago and still produce in the original country of origin. You never know when you might wish to add to your collection or replace something that got damaged, was lost during a move, or never got returned by someone who borrowed it.

I was about to spend over $500 on additions to my Calphalon tri-ply set, including a 12" wok with covered lid, stock pot, pasta insert, a 3QT chef's pan, a set of every size of shallow sauce pan, and more. I already have every size of regular sauce pan, skillet, and saute pan, plus a lot more. The in-between size of the shallow sauce pans would have been a perfect addition. Since the lids and pans are incompatible with what I already have, I just bought a 1QT sauce pan (there is no lid in its size) for $30, and called it good. I can live with my existing collection, so that's what I'll do instead.

By the way, I wrote twice to Calphalon regarding the incompatible lids, and all they did was send me automated responses asking me if my issue was resolved. They never did address the issue.

The only reason I gave Calphalon a full three stars is because it's on a par with pretty much everything else getting cranked out of China these days. Let's hope and pray that there is no lead or mercury in the metal. In the USA, lead is commonly used in alloys to enhance machinability, but not for anything that may come into contact with food or would be put on or in a human, like jewelry, surgical tools, and cookware. Outside the USA, mercury could also be used for the same purpose. The Chinese have already demonstrated that they have no problem putting melamine in infant formula and lead-based paint in childrens' toys. Don't put it past them to use a stainless steel alloy that has lead or mercury in it. For those who don't know, stainless steel is an alloy.

"Love the product, hate the price." 2009-11-08
By Austin Hastings (New Jersey, USA)
This is a fantastic product, which I fully intend to buy. I find it incredibly offensive (and possibly actionable) that Amazon lists the "List Price" of this set at $820, announcing that you save 51% by paying only 399.95. In fact, the manufacturer's website lists the MSRP as 399.99 -- buying from Amazon would save 4 cents on a $400 purchase, or 0.0001 (0.01%) off the "list" price.

Thanks, Amazon, for lying to your customers.

"Still Beautifyl After 4 Years" 2009-09-19
By Dr. Elaine O. Chaika (Eastern New England)
We bought the Calphalon Tri-Ply stainnless over 4 years ago, and, while we were buying, added to the basic package. We have both large and small saute pans, large and small fry pans, 8 quart soup, and every size of saucepan plus the double boiler insert (which I rarely use, since I have a melt setting on my range.) Since our cookware has to be displayed on racks in the kitchen, it must be bright and shiny with no spots, stains, or discolorations, and since I am very crabby if my pan fried foods are not all evenly browned and/or take a long time to brown, ditto bringing water to a boil, I demand a lot from my cookware, although I am not a professional chef. Furthermore, I loathe scrubbing pots (or anything else), so it is esential that my cookware go into the dishwasher and come out sparkling. The Calophalon Tri-Ply passes all my tests. The directions that came with the cookware said to heat a fry or saute pan until the top edge feels hot to the touch, then to put in oil. Doing that not only decreases the amount of oil you need, but pieces of coated fish or potato latkes, or anything else brown up quickly and perfectly evenly. There is no problem of having center pieces dark brown and those at the side almost white. When I'm through frying, after putting the food on a platter, often I deglaze the pan easily by splashing a little wine into the hot pan and immediately scraping the fried up bits left behind, and letting it cook a minute, giving me a simple sauce to pour over food. For things like crepes or latkes, which you don't want a sauce on, cleanup is still no problem. I let the pan cool down for a few minutes, then spray the interiors thoroughly with Dawn Power Booster before putting them in the dishwasher. For boiled food, of course, I just put the pots in the dishwasher and for thick sauces, like caramel, I just pour a little Dawn in the pot and let it soak in water a while, and then put it in the dishwasher. Most pots come out shining and spotless, but if there are any spots or discoloration, a quick shine with a soapy steel wool pad usually makes them gleam. If the pot still isn't up to my standards of perfection, I shake a bit of Bar Tender powder, especially on the pan bottom. Then I run over the bottom in a circular mmotion maybe two passes at the most, and that does the trick. All of my pots look brand new. Given the ease of maintenance plus the rapidity and evenness of cooking, I can see no reason for anything more expensive. I could have bought All-Clad when I bought the Calphalon, but it was double the price, and holding the pans side by side, I could see no reason for that expense. I didn't like the design of the Cuisinart, so didn't buy them, although I'm sure they're fine. That brings me to the final thing about the Calphalon, its design. The pots have a very pleasing curve shape, and the handles are hefted so that they're easyy to pick up and carry, even with food in them. They are also very sturdy. I also happen to like the glass covers, which are pleasantly domed, but some people might prefer an all metal lid. The glass shines up beautifully in the dishwasher. Finally, beware of stainless that has only an aluminum bottom instead of a complete aluminum core. The tri-clads cook more rapidly and evenly than a pot with only stainless for its sides. Also, there is very expensive tri-clad copper core cookware with an unclad copper bottom. Those can't be put in a dishwasher, and, having had a set of copper bottom pans, I know that it takes a lot, and I do mean a lot, of cleaning and polishing to keep the copper untarnished and unstained. I don't know how much faster copper heats up than aluminum, but I do know the Tri-Ply over aluminum hears up evenly in a matter of seconds on a smooth top range.

 "I liked them." 2009-12-07
By Meno (Washington, DC)
I got all the shapes I needed for a low price. The 8" round cake pans almost look like pie plates so they're a bit smaller than I expected but I didn't need any bigger. The loaf bread is 9" by 5", which I hope helps because I was wondering about the size before buying and I couldn't find the details anywhere. I'm happy with my purchase, they all work great and after baking my breads and muffins just come right out of the pan so the nonstick works great. I wash them by hand and getting any food residue from them is very easy too. They look sturdy, not like other cheap products that seem sheet thin. These are great for regular home baking.

I have this set for almost 2 years and absolutely happy with it. I love to bake and do it at least once a week. Usually I use nonstick cooking spray and wash this bakeware by hands, not in a dishwasher. Works for me!

 "Great product!" 2009-10-19
By Addicted-to-books
Unlike some of the other non-stick products out there, I found that this one lived up to it's claim. It's easy to clean and wonderful! As long as you follow the directions and don't use abrasive sponges, I feel it will last a long time.
